York and Monochrome Sepia

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend when I would get the chance to go through the photos that I clicked in York, Yorkshire recently using my new ( new old actually ) Olympus camera – Olympus OM-D-EM1 ii 🥳

It is quite an upgrade from the 1st generation Oly EM10. I am going to be completely honest, I have not yet found enough time to peruse through all the features that this camera has to offer. However, I did take it for a spin on my recent trip to York.

While I get used to the camera functionality and the customisation, I thought that it would be a good idea to take some street photos using in-built Monochrome+Sepia colour filter – get fun photos while I get accustomed to the feel and controls.

I did not have an option to add a colour filter to the Monochrome mode in EM10 mark i. The ability to further customise the b/w mode is really enjoyable. It allows me to capture the grit of older cities like York.

Typically, I try to hone my post processing skills by editing the RAW photos. But, it is nice to get good results SOOC – Straight Out Of the Camera.

I found York to be a great subject for this colour filter – it has the English charm and grit that looks marvellous with the lack of colour. Add the sepia colour filter to it for the cherry on top.

The colour mode also adds a bit of character when the sky is party cloudy – a touch of postcard look that I liked. I did experiment with some curve changes as well by boosting the highlights and bringing down the shadows for some depth and mood – nothing special, just a typical S-curve.

A busy town centre like York also teaches the value of AF lenses. I often miss moments while adjusting the focus on my inexpensive TTArtisan MF lenses. Whilst they are educational and help you get better with handling the equipment, the ability to capture the moment as soon as you see it using an AF lens is a clear winner if the subject is moving.

I cannot wait to try the other colour filters on the new camera.
